چکیده
Abstract The Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) contact interval is constrained by vertebrate fossil sites at seven in the Tornillo Group and lies within an 80–100-m stratigraphic section between top of Javelina Formation base “log jam sandstone” marker bed Black Peaks Formation. In western exposures this interval, highest occurrence situ dinosaur specimens lowest Paleocene mammal are separated unusual conglomerate bed. This thin coincides with Cretaceous Paleogene strata contains reworked fossils. It superficially similar to beds elsewhere attributed effects tsunamis generated Chicxulub impact; however, maximum depositional age ca. 63 Ma based on detrital zircons indicates that was deposited about three million years after K-Pg boundary event. mammalian fossils from immediately above represent a fauna can be no older than middle Torrejonian (To2 zone). therefore disconformal represents hiatus least years. A condensed occurs westernmost exposure contact, where 80 m absent below bed; these present farther east. likely records erosional event resulting uplift deformation nearby Terlingua monocline. Although poorly fossiliferous, several clearly indicate entire Late age. There compelling evidence for preservation horizon any Group, so represented Cretaceous/Paleocene here also includes some part latest time. Plant dieback under exceptional drought driven by elevation, not by plant traits, in Big Bend National Park, Texas, USA
In 2011, Big Bend National Park, Texas, USA, experienced the most severe single year drought in its recorded history, resulting in significant plant mortality. We used this event to test how perennial plant response to drought varied across elevation, plant growth form and leaf traits. In October 2010 and October 2011, we measured plant cover by species at six evenly-spaced elevations ranging f...
متن کاملPreliminary survey of the mayflies (Ephemeroptera) and caddisflies (Trichoptera) of Big Bend Ranch State Park and Big Bend National Park
The mayfly (Insecta: Ephemeroptera) and caddisfly (Insecta: Trichoptera) fauna of Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park are reported based upon numerous records. For mayflies, sixteen species representing four families and twelve genera are reported. By comparison, thirty-five species of caddisflies were collected during this study representing seventeen genera and nine families....
متن کاملFurther Assessment of Environmental Contaminants in Avian Prey of the Peregrine Falcon in Big Bend National Park, Texas
A small resident population of peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus anatum) in the Big Bend region of Texas has suffered reproductive failures since 1990. To continue our assessment of the effects of environmental contaminants on the peregrine falcon, we collected representative avian prey species during 2001 at Mariscal Canyon, Big Bend National Park. The avian carcasses were analyzed for inorg...
متن کاملTrophic Ecology of the Free-tailed Bats Nyctinomops Femorosaccus and Tadarida Brasiliensis (chiroptera: Molossidae) in Big Bend National Park, Texas
We analyzed fecal pellets from 59 Nyctinomops femorosaccus and 54 Tadarida brasiliensis to assess dietary overlap in an area of sympatry. Lepidoptera, Hemiptera, and Coleoptera were the most abundant orders of insects. Niche-breadth indices were narrow overall and highest in June for both species. Indices of overlap indicated nearly complete overlap in use of resources. There does not appear to...
